Looking for a place to see tons of birds with friends and family? Yeah, don’t go here. Looking for a location to patiently seek out eastern meadowlarks, bobolinks and other diminishing grassland dwellers? Then you’re in the right place! So, park your car onto the road’s shoulder, grab your binoculars and get your patience on. Steady Zen-like scanning of the grassland habitat will reveal surprises if you take your time. Be sure to take a break from looking down and scan the skies above, too. With zero tree cover, sunny days at this location provide an unobstructed view of raptors near and far soaring in the skies above.

Volant Strip Grasslands
True to its name, these open, gently rolling hills make a great place for finding ground-nesting birds. But be warned: this location is about quality, not quantity.
Getting there:
The Volant Grasslands Strip isn’t the easiest to find. So do yourself a favor and use the map function below to guide you there. Three final thoughts: 1. Be sure to park your vehicle well to the side. 2. Be careful when crossing the road. 3. The surrounding land is private property. Be respectful. Don’t hop fences. Ever.
Expect to see:
Eastern meadowlarks, bobolinks, grasshopper, field, Savannah, Henslow’s and song sparrows, eastern bluebirds, barn and tree swallows, eastern kingbirds, American woodcock (in early April), American kestrels and much more.
