I get to learn a lot while I’m working then share that knowledge with others.
Why is nature important to you?
Just me? It should be important to everyone!
If you could rename any bird, what would it be and why?
I’d name the black-capped chickadee the “Donbird” after my grandpa – it’s his favorite.
What do you think The Birdwatchers Store means to the local community?
It means a lot! We help people develop a love and respect for nature.

It supports our very existence and fills our lives with beauty.
If you could rename a bird, what would it be?
The red-bellied woodpecker. I think it should be called the red-headed woodpecker, but I guess that name is already taken!

What’s the funniest thing that happened to you at The Birdwatchers Store?
Once, two squirrels chewed into one of the plastic seed bins in the storage shed. I went out to fill the store feeders, took the lid off the bin and they jumped onto me! Don’t know who was more surprised – them or me.

Our customers. They’re a lot like birds: you never know which ones will fly in, but they’re all interesting!
If you could rename a bird, what would it be?
Ferruginous hawk. Can’t we just call it a “Fergie?”
What do you think The Birdwatchers Store means to the local community?
It’s a place where people from all walks of life can come in and be happy about the same things.

About a year.
What’s your favorite part about working here?
My favorite part is the constant flow of knowledge both from our staff and from our customers.
If you could rename a bird, what would it be?
The American Robin. When you say, “Robin” everyone just shrugs. I’d call it the “Rufous-Breasted Yard Thrush” just to make people notice this amazing bird again!
What do you think The Birdwatchers Store means to the local community?
Nature is the place where I find myself whenever I need to slow it down, take a deep breath, and appreciate the beauty around me. BWS helps so many people discover the same thing.

Helping other people connect with nature. Leading BWS Bird Walks. Getting paid in seed.
If you could rename a bird, what would it be?
Prothonotary Warbler. Can’t have a name that’s bigger than the bird.

It’s like a birding bar. People come in to talk about nature as much as they do to shop.
